Klose sidelined
Butt and Schweinsteiger to sit out cup clash

Quote:
Bayern are making strong progress in the Bundesliga and resume their Champions League quest in ten days, but the DFB Cup is the priority right now, as the men from Munich seek to overcome second division SpVgg Greuther Fürth in Wednesday evening’s last eight tie and take the next step on the road to the final in Berlin. “It’s the quickest way to a trophy,” said Ivica Olic in the build-up to the midweek clash.

Against the team currently lying eighth in the German second tier, Bayern boss Louis van Gaal is set to change his winning line-up of recent weeks in at least two positions. With an eye on the start of an intense period mainly featuring two games a week, keeper Jörg Butt and midfielder Bastian Schweinsteiger will be rested. Michael Rensing and Anatoliy Tymoshchuk are the likely replacements.

Striker Miroslav Klose is a definite non-starter after turning an ankle in Sunday training. The Germany international will be excused duty as a precaution, but he is not expected to be sidelined for long. According to the plan, Klose will resume the team training programme later in the week.

The visitors from the town adjacent to Nuremberg in Middle Franconia are suffering a few injury problems of their own. Stephan Schröck is out with a strain, while Edgar Prib (ankle) and reserve keeper Jasmin Fejzic (knee surgery) are currently restricted to sports rehab training. Former FCB reserves Max Grün, Jan Mauersberger, Stephan Fürstner and Leonhard Haas are all candidates for the matchday squad.

Test of character
‘Goliath’ Bayern wary of 'David' Fürth

Quote:
In Middle Franconia, 230 kilometres to the north of Munich, stands a stone monument the FCB stars would do well not to ignore. “DFB Cup 14.8.1994”, the inscription reads, with “TSV Vestenbergsgreuth 1-0 Bayern” underneath. The local club, then in the fifth-tier Bavarian league, decided to record their greatest-ever victory for posterity. Now, almost 16 years later, the memorial at the TSV club house is a stark warning to the Bayern of today.

On Wednesday, the nation’s most successful club meet SpVgg Greuther Fürth, the club which arose in 1996 from the merger of the senior playing section at Vestenbergsgreuth with nearby SpVgg Fürth. In terms of the going-in position, not a great deal has changed since that fateful day in 1994: FCB are second in the Bundesliga and the odds-on favourites, with Fürth, who lie eighth in the second division, clearly the underdogs. A walkover for Bayern, then?

No complacency

“That’s what people think, but it’s just not that easy,” insisted Mark van Bommel, who naturally played no role whatsoever in the embarrassing first-round exit back in August 1994. But the psychological dimension to a classic David versus Goliath cup tie remains unchanged. “We can’t take anything for granted,” warned the Bayern captain. Ivica Olic was in full agreement: “They look like easy opponents on paper, but we’ll have to be totally focused.”

Louis van Gaal will have been pleased to hear his senior players making statements of that nature. Despite Saturday’s 3-1 victory away to Wolfsburg, Munich’s tenth win on the bounce in all competitions, the coach was severely displeased with his men, complaining that lack of concentration could easily have cost Bayern dear. The players have accepted the criticism. “We share the opinion that we didn’t play well,” said Van Bommel.

Mental toughness required

The Dutch international slammed his side’s lack of focus and wastefulness with the ball in Wolfsburg: “We were sloppy and gave away much too much possession. We’ve never handed the opposing side so many chances in a single match.” Van Gaal has banged home the point about concentration, as the Fürth clash will certainly be a question of mentality and character.

A decade and a half ago, Vestenbergsgreuth made good their technical inferiority with passion, fighting spirit and determination. The men from Munich are expecting a similar full-blooded encounter this time round. “Fürth have nothing to lose. They’ll give it more than 100 percent,” warned Olic. “We have to be careful,” added Van Bommel, “you can toss away a lot of hard work in a single match.” That applies most explicitly to the cup, where defeat means the end of the road – as a monument in Middle Franconia reminds us.

Probable line-up:
Rensing - Lahm, van Buyten, Demichelis, Badstuber - van Bommel, Tymoshchuk - Ribery (Müller), Robben - Olic, Gomez

Maybe Contento and Ribery could start in this match, resting key players like Olic/Müller and Badstuber or van Buyten for the crucial matchs we have against Dortmund and Fiorentina.

It's better to rest some of our key players before we will face dortmund and fiorentina. I

would like to see players such as altintop, tymoschuk and some of our youngster play on

that match

Ribéry to start
Van Buyten out of cup clash with Fürth

Quote:
“Yes, he’ll start,” Van Gaal stated after Tuesday’s final pre-match training session. Ribéry last featured in the FCB starting line-up on 3 October last year, in the home Bundesliga meeting with FC Köln.
So that's it, Ribery will come back as a starter tomorrow. I wonder if Olic takes the bullet and he starts off in the bench. Certainly not Gomez, since we need a central striker present on the squad. Probably Robben can be rested.

Quote:
Butt, who is also rated a doubt for Saturday’s home Bundesliga meeting with Borussia Dortmund, will be replaced by Michael Rensing, with reserve keeper Thomas Kraft on the bench. Anatoliy Tymoshchuk is set to cover for Schweinsteiger. In the case of Van Buyten, Holger Badstuber could move inside to centre-half, with Danijel Pranjic in at left-back.
Defense will look like this then:

Rensing - Lahm, Demichelis, Badstuber, Pranjic. Im not scared about Pranjic as LB in the cup. I rather have van Buyten rested so he can play in the weekend.

Quote:
Van Gaal declined to say whether further changes might be in the offing. Youngsters Diego Conteno and Mehmet Ekici, who both recently signed professional forms, will feature in the matchday squad and might yet get playing time. “I’d have no hesitation in bringing them on,” confirmed Van Gaal.
They both wont start, but I'm sure they will play if everything goes well for Bayern in the first 45 minutes or so.

4 Bayern youth products play for Greuther Fürth: Jan Mauersberger, Leo Haas, Stephan Fürstner and Max Grün.

“The dumbest thing would be to travel to Munich thinking you didn’t have a chance,” said Fürstner.
“You always have a tiny chance in the cup, no matter who you’re playing,” added Haas.
