Franck Ribery included in France squad for Faeroe Islands
Quote:
France coach Raymond Domenech called up Franck Ribery on Monday for an upcoming 2010 World Cup qualifier away to the Faeroe Islands, even though the Bayern Munich player ruled himself out of the match last week.
Ribery missed Bayern's pre-season games because he has had tendinitis in his left knee since July 12.
On Friday, Ribery said that he was not due to resume training with Bayern until midweek, and would not be able to play against the Faeroe Islands.
"I only got the green light from the (Bayern) doctors to join up with the group on Wednesday," Ribery told L'Equipe TV on Friday. "It's obvious that it will be too tight for the Faeroe (Islands)."
But Domenech named him in his 22-man squad, which includes a first call-up for Toulouse midfielder Moussa Sissoko.
Domenech believes the 26-year-old Ribery can make a substitute appearance if needed.
"I have had him on the phone in the meantime," Domenech said. "He will start training with the (Bayern) squad again and is on track to play their first game against Hoffenheim (on Saturday). If he can play a bit of the match with them, he can play a bit of the match for us if necessary."
However, Domenech said Ribery definitely would not start the match on Aug. 12, and would only appear as a substitute.

Thirteen call-ups - Half the squad away on international duty
Quote:
Six Bayern players are representing Germany at senior and U-21 level. Philipp Lahm, Bastian Schweinsteiger, Mario Gomez and Miroslav Klose go in search of 2010 FIFA World Cup South Africa qualifying points against Azerbaijan in Baku.
Elsewhere, Holger Badstuber and Thomas Müller are set for debuts in the Germany U-21 team. Coach Rainer Adrion has included the FCB pair in his squad for the Lobanowski Cup in the Ukraine.
Croatia duo Ivica Olic and Danijel Pranjic are also looking for desperately-needed World Cup qualifying points. The East Europeans face Belarus in Minsk. Franck Ribéry and France appear to have an easier task on paper, as the 1998 world champions travel to Torshavn for a meeting with the Faeroe Islands.
Pride and little else is at stake for Hamit Altintop and Anatoliy Tymoshchuk, but both Bayern midfielders are involved in a potentially interesting game when they go head-to-head in the friendly between Ukraine and Turkey in Kyiv.
Friendlies are also on the schedule for Dutch defender Edson Braafheid and Belgian stopper Daniel van Buyten. Van Buyten travels to Prague for the Belgians’ meeting with the Czech Republic, while Braafheid takes to the field in Amsterdam for the prestige duel between the Netherlands and England.

FCB four spur Germany, Ribery returns, Olic on target twice
Quote:
Franck Ribéry appeared as a sub as France recorded a crucial victory in World Cup qualifying, defeating the stubborn Faeroes by the only goal of the game in Torshavn. France boss Raymond Domenech had agreed to field Ribéry only in the case of an emergency, but with the 2006 World Cup runners-up grimly hanging on after 65 minutes, the Bayern star replaced Florent Malouda for his first competitive run-out of the season.
In the Azerbaijani capital Baku, a Bayern quartet provided the inspiration and the goals as Germany stayed on course for a slot at next year's showdown in South Africa. Mario Gomez headed a Philipp Lahm cross wide early on, but Bastian Schweinsteiger curled home a deflected left-foot shot from the edge of the box to hand his side a 12th-minute lead. Miroslav Klose then passed up a glorious opportunity to double the advantage with the last move before the break, but the Munich man could not miss on 54 minutes, nodding the rebound into an empty net after Gomez hit the bar with a shot on the turn.
The man on form at the moment is Ivica Olic. Four days after netting in Hoffenheim, the FCB striker struck a match-winning brace for his country as Croatia advanced to a 3-1 victory against Belarus in Minsk. The summer signing headed his side into a 22nd-minute lead, and rounded off the scoring seven minutes from time. In between, Olic blasted a cross from club and country team-mate Danijel Pranjic against the post.
In the friendly meeting between Ukraine and Turkey in Kiev, Bayern men Anatoliy Tymoshchuk and Hamit Altintop went head-to-head. The Turks were the only ones celebrating afterwards though: Hamit struck on 65 minutes to round off a clear-cut 3-0 victory for his country.
FCB captain Mark van Bommel was missing, but Edson Braafheid flew the Bayern flag for the Netherlands as the Dutch drew 2-2 in a full-blooded friendly meeting with England in Amsterdam. Braafheid played the full 90 minutes, as did Daniel van Buyten in Teplice, although the centre-half and his Belgium team-mates fell 3-1 to the Czech Republic.

International round-up
Quote:
- Philipp Lahm, Bastian Schweinsteiger and Mario Gomez started the Germans' deserved 2-0 victory over 2010 hosts South Africa, while Miroslav Klose replaced Gomez at half-time to earn a 90th international cap. Gomez crowned the best of the passing moves with the opening goal of the game after 36 minutes. Mesut Özil finished off a move instigated by Schweinsteiger and Klose to wrap up the win after 77 minutes.
- Arjen Robben and Edson Braafheid comfortably finished on the winning side for the Netherlands in Enschede, where the men in orange beat Japan 3-0. Robin van Persie (69), Wesley Sneijder (73) and Klaas Jan Huntelaar (87) netted for the home team. Robben was substituted at half-time, while Braafheid failed to feature on the night.

- Qualifying has become a knife-edge affair for Franck Ribéry and France, who were held to a disappointing 1-1 draw at home to Romania in Paris. Thierry Henry opened for the home side three minutes after the restart, but Julien Escude put through his own goal on 56 minutes to level the scores. Ribéry, who had said beforehand he was not yet fit enough for the full 90 minutes, came on shortly after the equaliser.
- Croatia duo Danijel Pranjic and Ivica Olic remain second in Group 6 after a 1-0 win over Belarus in Zagreb, courtesy of an Ivan Rakitic goal after 24 minutes. Pranjic played the full 90 minutes, while Olic was substituted after 74 minutes.
- Ukraine and Anatoliy Tymoshchuk keep up the pressure. The East Europeans beat Andorra 5-0 in Kyiv on Saturday. Andriy Yarmolenko (18), Artem Milevskiy (45+2, 90+1 pen), Andriy Shevchenko (72, pen) and Yevgen Seleznov (90+5) scored the goals as Tymoshchuk completed the full match.
- Hamit Altintop went the full distance in Kayseri on Saturday as Turkey beat Estonia 4-2. Vladimir Voskoboinikov opened for the visitors after just seven minutes, and Konstantin Vassiljev later made it 2-2 on 52 minutes, but Tuncay Sanli (29, 72), Sercan Yildirim (36) and Arda Tunran (61) ensured Altintop and his team-mates took maximum points.
- Spain as good as wrapped up the group win with a 5-0 home success over Belgium, snuffing out the Red Devils' final slim hopes of a place in South Africa. David Silva (41, 68), David Villa (49, 85) and Gerard Pique (50) struck against the outclassed Belgians, for whom Daniel van Buyten played the full 90 minutes.

Bastian Schweinsteiger is just 25, but when Germany run out against Azerbaijan on Wednesday, he is set to earn his 70th senior cap. The Munich midfielder’s international record bears strong resemblances to that of the nation’s most-capped player, Lothar Matthäus. However, the record set by the 1990 World Cup winner, who clocked up no fewer than 150 appearances for his country, is not the Bayern youth product’s main target in his international career. “I’d rather finish with 90 caps and win the World Cup or the EURO than end up as the most-capped player,” Schweinsteiger declared on Monday.

International round-up
Quote:
|
- Germany continued their steady progress towards the 2010 World Cup finals in South Africa with a 4-0 home victory over Azerbaijan on Wednesday night. A sparse 35,369 crowd in Hanover saw captain Michael Ballack hand his side the lead with a 14th-minute penalty. Miroslav Klose, who replaced Mario Gomez at half-time, struck a brace on 55 and 66 minutes to effectively settle the issue, himself moving on to 47 goals for his country. Lukas Podolski rounded off the scoring 20 minutes from time as the Germans ultimately overpowered courageous opponents. Alongside Lahm and Gomez, Bastian Schweinsteiger also started the match.

- Second place in Group 7 is now the target for Franck Ribéry and 2006 World Cup runners-up France. The French made the worst possible start to their crunch away meeting with leaders Serbia, losing keeper Hugo Lloris to a straight red card after just ten minutes, but fought their way back to a 1-1 draw. Nenad Milijas converted from the spot on 11 minutes to fire the home side in front, but Thierry Henry prodded home on the half-hour to rescue a point. As in the previous fixture against Romania, Ribéry began on the bench before replacing Henry for the closing stages.
- The play-offs are Croatia’s only hope now following a 5-1 thumping away to England, who win Group 6 and qualify directly for South Africa following an eighth win in eight matches for Fabio Capello’s men. A Wayne Rooney strike and a brace apiece from Frank Lampard and Steven Gerrard accurately reflected England’s dominance over a poor Croatia side. Danijel Pranjic completed the 90 minutes, while Ivica Olic was substituted at half-time. The Croats, for whom Eduardo da Silva struck a consolation, remain in second place on 17 points.
- Anatoliy Tymoshchuk and Ukraine were unable to capitalise to the full extent on Croatia’s mauling, missing out on second spot in the table in a goalless stalemate against neighbours Belarus.
- In Group 5, Hamit Altintop and his Turkey team-mates are in grave danger of missing out on the finals after a 1-1 draw away to second-placed Bosnia Herzegovina. The Turks, who came third at the 2002 finals, are now four points adrift of the Bosnians with two games to play. Emre Belözoglu and Sejad Salihovic traded goals before the half-time interval, during which. Altintop was substituted.
- A poor campaign from Belgium went from bad to worse on Wednesday in an embarrassing defeat away to Armenia. The Red Devils, already out of the running before kick-off in fourth spot, lost 2-1 in Yerevan as the side in last place won their first match of the campaign. Daniel van Buyten covered the full 90 minutes, scoring Belgium’s consolation goal in stoppage time.
- The Netherlands, the first European nation to seal a berth at next year’s finals, completed their Group 9 programme against Scotland in Glasgow, making it eight wins out of eight courtesy of an 81st-minute Eljero Elia strike, the only goal of the night. Arjen Robben gave way to the goalscorer on 72 minutes, while Edson Braafheid watched the game from the bench.

Thirteen Bayern stars on international duty
Quote:
In their last two qualifying fixtures, Munich quartet Philipp Lahm, Bastian Schweinsteiger, Miroslav Klose and Mario Gomez aim to help Germany retain top spot in Group 4 and definitively book a place at next summer’s finals. The Germans require at least a point in Moscow on Saturday against chief pursuers Russia, followed by a win against Finland in Hamburg on Wednesday.
On the Tuesday and Friday, shooting stars Holger Badstuber and Thomas Müller will also report for duty with Germany, as the pair have been called up to coach Rainer Adrion’s 23-strong U-21 squad for friendlies, first against Slovenia in Fürth, and four days later against Israel in Frankfurt.
The French are without Franck Ribéry for the crunch fixtures. The 25-year-old, who limped out of Bayern’s goalless draw with Köln at half-time on Saturday, withdrew from the French squad on Monday afternoon and left the team training base in Clairefontaine. The winger is suffering from an inflamed tendon in his left knee, the French FA announced on its homepage.
The situation is even more problematic for Hamit Altintop and Turkey, who lie third in Group 5 on 12 points. The Turks travel to Brussels on Saturday to face Daniel van Buyten and Belgium, who are out of the running on just seven points. Four days later, Turkey are at home to Armenia in Bursa, with the Belgians facing Estonia in Tallin.
In Group 6, where England have emulated Spain and won the group on 24 points, Croatia pair Ivica Olic and Danijel Pranjic are up against the Ukraine and Anatoly Tymoshchuk for the runners-up spot. The Croats lie second on 17 points, two clear of the Ukrainians, but Tymoshchuk and his men have a game in hand. Croatia travel to Qatar for a friendly on 8 October, before completing their qualification programme in Kazakhstan on 14 October. Ukraine take on England in Dnipropetrovsk on Saturday, and round off their campaign away to last-placed Andorra four days later.
Over in South America, Argentina coach Diego Maradona has responded to the crisis engulfing the two-time winners, who are in grave danger of missing out on the 2010 finals, by summoning Martin Demichelis for the last two qualifiers, even though the Bayern man has only just recovered from injury. The Albiceleste meet tail-enders Peru in Buenos Aires on Saturday, before travelling to Montevideo for a crunch showdown with bogey opponents Uruguay in midweek. Argentina, currently only fifth in the table, effectively need a maximum six points to remain in with a shout of a direct qualifying berth.
Of all the Bayern players, left-back Edson Braafheid will clock up the most air miles this week. The Netherlands, with all uncertainty over their place at next summer’s finals out of the way, travel halfway round the world to face fellow finalists Australia in Sydney.

Demichelis is supposed to be in Argentina, but most papers say that he wont play against Peru.
Maradona dosen't want to risk him in a "easy match" at home against the last of the South-America Table. Argentina has a crunch match against Uruguay in Montevideo, that will probably give the last chance to Argentinians to either stay at home in 2010 or play the playoff against Costa Rica most likely.
