Schalke Sign Greek Midfielder Vassilios Pliatsikas

Schalke have confirmed that they have agreed to sign Greek midfielder Vassilios Pliatsikas from AEK Athens subject to a medical examination.

With key midfielder Jermaine Jones set to miss around three months with a shin injury, the Gelsenkirchen club were keen to bring in some cover and new trainer Felix Magath opted for the 21-year-old Greek.

"He is a very talented player," Felix Magath told the club's official website.

"His strengths are his tackling ability. I have also spoken with [Greece coach] Otto Rehhagel, among others, about Pliatsikas and he values him."

Pliatsikas has been capped just one by Greece, but is experienced in the Greek Super League, despite his young age, having notched up 51 appearances for AEK.

He was also a member of the Greek U-19 squad which finished runners-up at the 2007 European Championships.

Schalke Chairman Clemens Tonnies Promises End To Bundesliga Wait

With new trainer Felix Magath installed at the helm, Schalke chairman Clemens Tonnies believes it is only a matter of time before the Koenigsblauen end their long wait to bring the league title to the Ruhr.

The club have never won the Bundesliga in it’s current guise and have to go back as far as 1958 for their last national league title. Their only other real moment of glory came back in 1997, when they won the UEFA Cup.

Felix Magath, who won the title last season with Wolfsburg, will have high expectations on him, but Tonnies has urged the fans not to expect too much in the first season.

"We are going to win this trophy," Tonnies told the club's AGM at the weekend.

"Felix Magath has promised it to us, but don't kill me if it only happens in his fourth year. He is not a magician or miracle-maker, he is no messiah."

Magath, for his part, is keen on adding to the Bundesliga title he won with Wolfsburg, as well as the three he claimed while he was in charge at Bayern Munich.

"I want to achieve the maximum," Magath said.

"We have a good team and we will be playing for a place in Europe, I am certain of that."

RAKITIC SIDELINED

Too bad we never wanted to get Rafinha, as getting foreign players who are already adjusted to life in Germany is good, and moving Lahm back to the left would solve all of our RB/LB problems!

Schalke handed funding boost

Very simple this was not just a Schalke but a Bundesliga problem, if a Bundesliga club has problem the entire Bundesliga has problems but without problems we can look forward getting the thing we deserve (and that's being the number 1 league in the world)

The stronger league we have the better showing BL can do in European tournaments.... a stronger BL means better and stronger competition for us (Bayern) and then WE can do better in Champions League.
