Germany without striker Klose for friendly

Quote:
Germany will be without striker Miroslav Klose for its friendly against Ivory Coast on Wednesday, the team's first game since the suicide of its goalkeeper Robert Enke.

The Germany team arrived at its headquarters in Duesseldorf from Hannover, where it attended the memorial service for Enke on Sunday. Enke threw himself in front of a train Tuesday.

Klose's twin sons had contracted swine flu and although the Bayern Munich striker has been cleared by doctors after spending a few days in isolation and under observation, Germany coach Joachim Loew decided to drop him for the friendly.

Injured Ballack to miss Ivory Coast friendly

Quote:
Captain Michael Ballack will miss Germany's World Cup warm-up clash on Wednesday against the Ivory Coast as the Chelsea star has failed to recover from a minor knee injury, coach Joachim Loew said.

"We can definitely say that Michael Ballack will not play on Wednesday," Loew told reporters on Monday.

"He has an infection in the back of the knee and there has been a reaction," the coach said.

"After consultation with the doctors - I also spoke to Michael Ballack this morning - I have decided that he will not play. He needs maybe two or three days of rest," the coach continued.

The 33-year-old midfielder has not trained since last week, Loew said, adding that he would also not sit on the bench but would stay with the squad.

Loew also said he had not yet decided who would start in goal for the team, following the suicide of top goalkeeper Robert Enke, whose death is sure to overshadow the match in Gelsenkirchen, western Germany.

Lahm to captain Germany

Quote:
Bayern Munich defender Philipp Lahm will captain Germany in Wednesday's friendly against the Ivory Coast as the national side look to build for the 2010 World Cup in South Africa.

With captain Michael Ballack out of the game with a knee injury, Bayern's vice-captain Lahm will lead the side as the 26-year-old picks up his 63rd cap.

Bremen goalkeeper Tim Wiese will start the game in goal, but will be replaced by Schalke 04's Manuel Neuer at half-time.

Bayern Munich star Bastian Schweinsteiger is likely to lead the midfield attack along with Bremen playmaker Mesut Oezil and Cologne's Lukas Podolski.

Striker Stefan Kiessling, who plays for Bundesliga leaders Leverkusen, will partner Bayern's Mario Gomez up front.

Lahm almost made a fatal error and cost us a goal! He better wake up! He looks a little sleepy back there.
