Maradona: Spots still up for grabs
Argentina coach Diego Maradona insisted he has not ruled anybody out of World Cup contention.

Quote:
Maradona has a firm idea of half of his squad for this summer's showpiece event in South Africa but claims there are still places up for grabs.

"I already phoned the 50% of the players who will play the World Cup."This match is Argentina's last confirmed date before the World Cup finals, where the Albicelestes were drawn in Group B alongside Nigeria, South Korea and Greece.

The Argentinian Football Association are trying to set up another friendly in Buenos Aires prior to the tournament.
We should be able to beat Argentina who's level in the last matches has been reaaaaally bad. This is the list of players that Maradona has given for the match in Munich:

  • Walter Samuel (Inter Milan)
  • Nicolas Burdisso (Inter Milan)
  • Clemente Rodriguez (Estudiantes)
  • Gabriel Heinze (Marseille)

Midfielders
  • Javier Mascherano (Liverpool)
  • Jonas Gutierrez (Newcastle)
  • Angel Di Maria (Benfica)
  • Juan Sebastian Veron (Estudiantes)
  • Jesus Datolo (Olympiacos)
  • Mario Bolatti (Fiorentina)

Forwards

I just finished my tattoo and had the WC dates put on. I was feeling pretty optomistic and was thinking of having 2010 added... but I didnt want to jinx anything. Our squad is looking better this year than in 2006.

Apart from the Forwards this squad doesn't look really strong. That said the Forwards are world class of course but since midfield doesn't look like it can provide alot creativity they propably won't get much chances.

Yeah but Strikers need creative midfielders. There simply are none in Argentinas Squad since Messi is listed as forward.

Argentina's best choice of line-up for the World Cup is:

------------------------Andujar---------------------
---Otamendi----Demichelis----Samuel----Rodriguez---

-----------------------Masherano-------------------
-----------Lucho González--------Verón-------------

-------Messi---------------------------Tévez-------
-------------------------Milito----------------------

With a 4-3-3 its the best choice they have. In this case they can fully use Gutierrez and Di Maria to replace Messi/Tevez if needed and also have Agüero replacing Milito. This line-up allows them to play collectivelly instead of depending of Riquelme coming back or not to the NT. Both Veron and Gonzalez can help offensivelly and also defensivelly + in this line-up Messi plays on the position that he is most happy at.

Thing is in the hands of a half decent coach this squad would still be dangerous but they have Maradona as coach so Messi is propably playing as CB or some bullshit like that so no reason to be afraid of Argentina.

Loew names Kroos, Mueller to squad

Quote:
Germany coach Joachim Loew has included Bayer Leverkusen's Toni Kroos and Bayern Munich's Thomas Mueller in the squad for next week's friendly against Argentina.

"Both of them have caught the eye with good performances in the Bundesliga in recent months and have earned their chance," Loew said Friday.

The German football federation said Werder Bremen goalkeeper Tim Wiese is out of next Wednesday's match in Munich with an injury. Hamburg midfielder Marcell Jansen also is doubtful for the game because of illness.

The Argentina match will be Germany's last before its World Cup squad is named in May.

Squad:

Goalkeepers: Rene Adler (Bayer Leverkusen), Manuel Neuer (Schalke).

Defenders: Jerome Boateng (Hamburger SV), Arne Friedrich (Hertha Berlin), Philipp Lahm (Bayern Munich), Per Mertesacker (Werder Bremen), Marcel Schaefer (Wolfsburg), Serdar Tasci (Stuttgart).

Midfielders: Michael Ballack (Chelsea), Christian Gentner (Wolfsburg), Thomas Hitzlsperger (Lazio), Aaron Hunt (Werder Bremen), Marcell Jansen (Hamburger SV), Sami Khedira (Stuttgart), Toni Kroos (Bayer Leverkusen), Marko Marin (Werder Bremen), Thomas Mueller (Bayern Munich), Mesut Oezil (Werder Bremen), Bastian Schweinsteiger (Bayern Munich), Christian Traesch (Stuttgart), Piotr Trochowski (Hamburger SV).

Forwards: Cacau (Stuttgart), Mario Gomez (Bayern Munich), Stefan Kiessling (Bayer Leverkusen), Miroslav Klose (Bayern Munich), Lukas Podolski (Cologne).

If I were Loew I would really be keeping my eye on Poldi. If he doesnt fare well in the next few matches I would put Mueller up front with Klose, Gomez and Kiessling.

This has to be the final squad for Germany at the WC. Although I will make one change: Podolski out, Kuranyi in.
