Contento inks professional deal

Quote:
The club policy of drawing frequently on talent nurtured by the junior team youth section, which saw Holger Badstuber and Thomas Müller join the professional ranks a year ago, has continued with the promotion of Diego Contento to the senior squad. The 19-year-old defender has inked a deal binding him to FCB until 30 June 2011, and will switch from the reserves to Louis van Gaal’s squad with immediate effect.

“I’m delighted that Diego Contento has become the latest player coached and developed by ourselves to be elevated to the first-team squad,” commented Christian Nerlinger. The director of sport also announced imminent talks with David Alaba and Mehmet Ekici with a view to securing the youngsters’ future at Bayern.

Contento, who has been handed the squad number 26, was just five when he first started training with Bayern, and subsequently went on to play at every youth level for the club. In the run-up to Christmas last term, then reserve coach Hermann Gerland promoted the defender from the U-19 youths to the second team, for whom Contento has scored two goals in 25 third division appearances to date.

Van Gaal regularly invited the Munich-born player with Italian roots to train with the senior squad in pre-season last summer. He played a full part in the mid-season training camp in Dubai, as did Alaba and Ekici. In 2007, the trio were members of Bayern’s German U-17 championship-winning side (picture). “They have a great chance of making it into the Bayern Munich first team,” commented Van Gaal, the inspiration behind Badstuber and Müller’s stellar ascent to regular status in the Bundesliga.

Hey Filo, is there a way to get the weight of a player in the stats as well? So then we can see if he can hold his own or blow away with the wind.

Cheers,
T

'Notte magica'
Contento revels in Champions League debut

Quote:
The singer Gianna Nannini performed a ditty named Notti magiche for the 1990 World Cup, just after Diego Contento came into the world. 19 years later, the Munich-born German-Italian has enjoyed his own notte magica, a magic night: Wednesday evening brought his Champions League debut, against an Italian club, and watched by his proud parents up in the Allianz Arena stands.

Belief by coaching staff

Assistant coaches Hermann Gerland and Andries Jonker briefed Contento at half-time on what to do and expect. “Hermann Gerland told me I should believe in myself and show everyone what I can do,” the Germany U-20 international revealed. Boss Louis van Gaal felt no need to say anything. “I believe in the player,” the coach said afterwards.

Diego Armando Contento
'My parents supported Napoli'

Quote:
Love him or hate him, Diego Armando Maradona is a name familiar to all football fans. Some 13 years after his last match as a player, the Argentina coach continues to polarise opinion, praised for his prodigious ability, but castigated as a poor role model for cheating and a less than salubrious private life. However, no-one doubts he was one of the all-time great players.

Bayern have a Diego of their own now. Since the start of the year, Diego Armando Contento has been a member of the senior squad. In the space of a whirlwind ten days, he has made debuts in the DFB Cup, the Champions League and the Bundesliga. The 19-year-old even started last weekend’s 1-1 draw away to Nürnberg. “The last two weeks have been terrific. A dream’s come true for me,” Contento told fcbayern.de.

By way of contrast with his namesake, Bayern’s Diego is a defender. Contento is at his most comfortable as a left-back, as he is left-footed, just like Maradona. The pair are not dissimilar in stature either, although at 176 cm (5 ft 9 in) Contento is a shade taller than the diminutive Maradona at 165 cm (5 ft 5 in).

The first names Diego Armando were deliberately chosen in homage to the Argentine footballer by Contento’s Italian parents, both passionate football fans. “They come from Naples, so they were naturally huge Napoli fans,” Contento revealed to fcbayern.de: “Maradona was Napoli’s star player back then.”
