Yuri Zhirkov To Sign For Chelsea On Wednesday – Report
Quote:
CSKA Moscow star Yuri Zhirkov will sign a contract with the Blues on Wednesday, according to reports in Russia.
Yuri Zhirkov has been linked with a move away from CSKA Moscow for some time now, with Chelsea and Barcelona both thought to be in the running for the player's signature.
The Russia international insisted earlier this month he had no knowledge of Chelsea's interest, but news daily Sport-Express reports that the 25-year-old defender, who can also play on the left wing, will fly to London on Wednesday to rubber-stamp a four-year contract.
It is believed that the signing of Zhirkov, who has been one of Europe's most sought-after players since his impressive displays for Russia at Euro 2008, will cost Chelsea a fee in the region of €20 million.

Yuri Zhirkov's £18m Transfer To Chelsea Nears Completion - Report
Chelsea officials are in Moscow, according to a press report...
Quote:
Chelsea are fast approaching the conclusion of star winger Yuri Zhirkov's transfer from Russian Premier League side CSKA Moscow, as Blues officials are in Moscow ready to finalise the £18 million deal.
Despite the blossoming of French winger Florent Malouda, much maligned during his rookie season due to poor form, but began to put in a series of strong performances at the beginning and end of the current campaign, Zhirkov is regarded to provide Chelsea with an alternative dimension in a midfield that has been criticised in the past as one-paced.
According to Sportsmail, Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich has agreed a deal in principle with CSKA president Yevgeny Giner, and the player in question is ready to pen a three-year contract worth £80,000 per week.
CSKA manager Zico has compared the inevitable loss of Zhirkov to that suffered by Manchester United and AC Milan due to the respective departures of Cristiano Ronaldo and Kaka, both to Real Madrid.
"Currently in football there is no player who is able to replace Zhirkov. Zhirkov to CSKA is like Cristiano Ronaldo to Manchester United or Kaka to AC Milan.
"As we know, both players moved to Real Madrid and I think their former clubs will be seriously concerned about how they will do in the future without their star players.
"Remember how Manchester looked last season when Cristiano Ronaldo was missing. The attack of the team looked much weaker," he concluded.

EPL Champions Manchester United: Officially Sign Antonio Valencia from Wigan
BREAKING NEWS: Official: Manchester United Sign Antonio Valencia From Wigan Athletic
The Red Devils have confirmed the winger's move across Lancashire...
Quote:
Manchester United have today made their first major capture of this summer's transfer window, and signed Ecuador international Antonio Valencia from Wigan Athletic.
The 23-year-old joins for an undisclosed fee, and has signed a four-year contract at Old Trafford.
United manager Alex Ferguson was delighted to have secured the player's signature, telling the club's official website, "Antonio is a player we have admired for some time now, having spent the last two years in the Premier League with Wigan.
"I am sure his pace and ability will make a significant contribution to the team."
The player himself echoed that delight, claiming that the prospect of plying his trade in front of United's massive crowds was a decisive factor in persuading him to move from the DW Stadium, as well as playing alongside some of the biggest names in world football.
"Joining Manchester United is a dream come true for me. I have enjoyed my time at Wigan, but I am thrilled to have the chance to challenge for the biggest honours in club football here," he said.
"Playing in front of 76,000 fans alongside players like Wayne Rooney, Rio Ferdinand and Ryan Giggs will be an amazing experience. I can’t wait to get started."

Man Utd sign Michael Owen.
OFFICIAL: Michael Owen Joins Manchester United
The striker has joined the Red Devils in what is this summer's shock move in the transfer market...
Quote:
Michael Owen has signed for Manchester United, completing a move that even a couple of days ago would have been laughed at as being too far-fetched for serious consideration. He has signed a two-year contract.
The Red Devils have confirmed the striker's capture on their official website, and Owen is clearly delighted to have completed such sensational move, saying, "I had just begun to talk to other clubs when out of the blue Sir Alex phoned me on Wednesday afternoon, invited me to have breakfast with him the next morning during which he told me that he wanted to sign me. I agreed without a moment's thought.
"This is a fantastic opportunity for me and I intend to seize it with both hands.
"I am now looking forward to being a Manchester United player and I am fortunate that I already know so many of the players here. I missed pre-season last year and am pleased that I will be starting at Carrington from day one.
"I want to thank Sir Alex for the faith he has shown in me and I give him my assurance that I will repay him with my goals and performances."
United manager Alex Ferguson was also pleased to have reinforced his forward line, depleted by the recent departure of Cristiano Ronaldo and the imminent exit of Carlos Tevez, stating, "Michael is a world class forward with a proven goalscoring record at the highest level and that has never been in question.
"Coming to Manchester United with the expectations that we have is something that Michael will relish."
Owen will now link up with friends and former England colleagues Wayne Rooney and Rio Ferdinand, as he looks to put himself back in the frame for Fabio Capello's England squad with the World Cup only a year away.

Official: Chelsea sign "Russian Ronaldinho"
Yuri Zhirkov Signs For Chelsea
Carlo Ancelotti has confirmed that the "Russian Ronaldinho" has joined the Blues...
Quote:
Chelsea have made their first major signing of the summer as CSKA Moscow winger Yuri Zhirkov was named as a confirmed acquisition at Carlo Ancelotti's unveiling as the latest boss of the Stamford Bridge outfit.
Ancelotti, enunciating clearly in assured English, said, "I think that Zhirkov, Turnbull, and Sturridge are all Chelsea players. I don't know very well Sturridge or Turnbull, but I know Zhirkov."
When asked if he had signed Zhirkov, he said, "Yes."
The 25-year-old played 139 games for his former club, scoring 15 goals. He was a shortlisted candidate for last year's Ballon d'Or, and has developed a growing reputation as one of the most fearsome prospects down the left flank.
Zhirkov has also displayed his credentials on the international scene in last summer's European Championship where, like Arsenal's Andrey Arshavin, he shone brightly.
Zhirkov is believed to have signed in an £18 million deal. He will provide competition for both Ashley Cole at full back, and Florent Malouda at left wing.

Richards makes swine flu recovery
Quote:
Manchester City defender Micah Richards is making a good recovery from swine flu after contracting the illness while on holiday in Cyprus.
The 21-year-old has been confined to his hotel room but his publicist Max Clifford says he is making progress.
"He is fine, he is virtually back to his old self now and he can't wait to get back," Clifford told the BBC.
"To my knowledge he's the first professional footballer to get swine flu so he's made a bit of history."
The England international revealed to The Sun newspaper he caught the virus while on holiday in Ayia Napa, where he was relaxing after helping England reach the final of the Under-21 European Championships in Sweden - a match they lost 4-0 to Germany.
"At first I thought it was a really bad chest infection, or maybe alcohol poisoning," he told The Sun.
"I felt so weak that I couldn't move or eat. My friends had to bring me drinks in bed.
"No-one out there is so fit and healthy they can't catch swine flu. If I can get it, anyone can."
"When I was told I had swine flu all sorts of things started going through my mind. You see on the news people dying of it."
Richards, who was due to fly home on Wednesday, is taking Tamiflu medication while in isolation in a five-star hotel in the Cypriot party resort on the south east coast and hopes to be able to return to Britain on Sunday.
"My club have been very understanding. I'll get some stick from the lads when I do return - they will probably all turn up to training in surgical masks.
"No-one out there is so fit and healthy they can't catch swine flu. If I can get it, anyone can."
The British government said Wednesday that 9,718 cases of swine flu had been confirmed since the disease reached the country in late April, and so far 15 people have died from the illness in Britain.
French league club Monaco said on Saturday that four players were being treated for swine flu.
The club said they are expected to make full recoveries after taking medication to treat the virus.

An employee at United's megastore, a few days ago: "We haven't got his number yet, which might have had an effect, [but] we are not expecting a big demand even when that is known. As far as I know, no one has asked for [it]".

I can't belive players are believing that City will actually do something next season.
They've gotten Tevez, a really good player. Man Utd are really stupid for letting him go.
But oh well. It's not like we've lost any players to them.
