That was the final gas in tank from Schweini, but in 2013-14 he was injured a lot (Lahm was forced to play midfield, remember?)

Lahm wasn't forced to play midfield, Pep forced him

Welp, there was no else on the team that could perform as well as Lahm did at midfield, Martinez got injured, someone needed to play DM.

Unless you thought Jan Kirchoff was a real option?

I'm too lazy to check transfermarkt, but we had Bastian/Javi/Kroos/Thiago/PEH as options and we also sold Gustavo

Pep saw Javi as CB and Lahm as midfielder for unknown reasons

Here is an example: UEFA Super Cup
Lahm starting as midfield and Javi on the bench (he came in as a sub and scored that late equalizer)

Anyway I don't want to return to Pep's era ...

If I recall correctly, Pep initially played Lahm as MF not because of a lack of MFs but specifically because of a lack of registas, especially after Thiago's first injury. Interestingly, Lahm as regista was a fucking phenomenal player - the problems with Lahm in midfield came shortly afterward when Lahm played as more of a wide midfielder. In effect, Lahm played two different midfield roles and did only one well.

I miss him, too. But on the pitch, he's been perfectly replaced.
