Just to show you exactly where I'm coming from, I rate Modric FAR higher than Thiago - but not at doing the job Thiago does at Bayern.
I am a little bit confused ..
a genuine question, in your opinion, what is it that Thiago offers to Bayern?

I'm having a busy day at work right now so I can't write this as well as I'd like, but I think Tommy's post of the subject was very good. I echo his views with regard solely to Thiago's attributes that set him apart. Hear that, Tommy? I really liked your post

Being a regista is hard - arguably the hardest role in the game. No matter how highly we rate midfielders like Vidal, Tolisso, Schweinsteiger, etc., they are simply not that type of midfielder. It would be like asking Anatoliy Tymoshchuk to play attacking midfielder simply because you looked at their "midfielder" and thought that it meant just one thing. A good regista role is probably the rarest iteration of midfielder right now, even though it's in such hot demand. The reason? It's a fundamentally harder position to play.

Despite this, I have said since the final that I am ok with the idea of selling Thiago. I really am. I just want us to properly understand what it is he does, and why it is it's so valuable to us. I do not believe that Thiago can be replaced in a like-for-like fashion without bringing in one of Kroos or Verratti. I truly can't think of anyone else who has his array of skills, no matter how much more in general I like players like Modric or James. We CAN make due without Thiago, and do so well, but it's going to require a MAJOR shift in tactics. For example, we could go back to the Treble-Heynckes-Era's dual holding midfielders. But what we can't do without Thiago (or Kroos or Verratti) is continue with the same amazing midfield-style we have.

On a final note, I want to say that Thiago has so far been very, very good in our last four matches against Madrid. With all the real changes that need to be made at Bayern, re-wroking the best part of our team - the midfield - just feels like a complete misuse of time.

We're in a pretty good place because unless Barça opens up their wallets we get to keep a unique talent and player that solidifies the best midfield in Europe giving us an edge against the Spanish sides we've struggled to beat. If that wallet opens up, we can finally get an elite talent in our attack, add to an already physically world class midfield or Uli can add onto our cool new youth facility

we don't need a MAJOR shift in tactics (though they'll be there nontheless, given the new coach and all that), given how much time thiago spent on the sidelines before and I don't recall any major tactic changes being made then.

verratti is even more prone to crumble under pressure than thiago, so thanks but no thanks.

btw, are you (finally) saying that kroos is better than thiago ?

I don't know why selling Thiago is even debated ?!
If we can keep him.. We should... Simple as that!

What a fucked up world in which we sell Thiago and keep Müller!

We made big tactical changes when Thiago wasn't here and our gameplay was poorer because of it.

I agree with you about Verratti, I think Thiago is better. Regarding Kroos, Thiago kept him in his pocket, so I don't think he's necessarily better than Thiago either.

Müller is "striker" when they don't want to buy a 9 back up.

Müller is "winger" when they don't want to buy a 4th winger.

Müller is now midfielder when they want to sell players.

Next season Müller will be right-back.

I don't know who else he could be considering as a midfielder..Kimmich? This is one of the people planning our squad so apparently we have 9 players for midfield positions and he mentions that we only have 3 or 4 places. The 4 would have to be Müller in that case as a bullshit CAM/CF hybrid.
