Super second string
Chorus of praise for Alaba and Co

Quote:
Following FCB’s 6-0 victory over Ingolstadt, David Alaba left the Allianz Arena with a distinct limp. “Someone stood on my toe,” the 19-year-old explained, otherwise showing no appetite to hang around and answer reporters’ questions. No matter: the Austrian’s actions on the field had spoken volumes, as he crowned a fleet-footed, intelligent, pacy and athletic display with his maiden goal in the DFB German Cup.

The 63,000 at the stadium were impressed – and so was the FCB boss, who repeatedly spoke of the player’s raw talent and huge potential. “He’s come into the side and fitted in at once. He has the necessary quality, not simply to represent Bayern, but to become a top-class player here in a year or two,” Jupp Heynckes enthused. However, Alaba will have to remain patient for now. The midfielder has made 12 appearances for the club so far this term, but has only started three matches.

“We’re functioning really well as a team,” continued Heynckes, “so it’s a little more difficult for him at present.” However, the coach knows he can call on Alaba at any time, and the player will answer that call with a committed display. The same applies to the other squad players who featured against Ingolstadt and performed with great credit, namely Nils Petersen, Daniel Pranjic, Diego Contento, Jörg Butt, Ivica Olic, and Takashi Usami.

“Most of them are internationals with experience of the Champions League. If I can’t pick them for a game like this, I don’t know when I can,” Heynckes reasoned after fielding six new faces on Wednesday evening. None of the players was a let-down. Apart from Alaba, the standout performance came from Petersen, who scored his first brace in a Bayern shirt. “We’ve shown the coach he can rely on us,” the striker said, “any player considered good enough to appear for Bayern can feel proud. I’m delighted the coach has put his faith in me.“

Big moment for Takashi

In return, Heynckes praised Petersen for his exceptionally hard work in training. “Obviously, it’s not easy for Nils, who has to wait for his chance and fight to get noticed – but he knew that before joining us,“ commented the 66-year-old. Petersen has certainly done well so far when opportunity has come knocking. He was thrown in at the deep end away to Schalke on Matchday 6 after Mario Gomez pulled out with injury, scoring the vital opening goal in FCB’s 2-0 win.

Nils added two more goals against FCI. Takashi Usami only struck once against the outclassed second division strugglers, but the Japan junior international celebrated deliriously, as it was his first senior goal for Bayern – a very special moment for him, and for the customary hordes of Japanese reporters and camera teams at the Allianz Arena. “This goal will be one of my lasting memories,“ the talented youngster said afterwards. Team-mate Franck Ribéry declared himself “delighted for Takashi.”

Real sense of belonging

Usami has made just one Bundesliga appearance so far, spending far more time with the fourth division reserves. The 19-year-old still needs to work on his physique, according to Heynckes. “But Takashi is a huge talent, an instinctive footballer with a real gift for the game, like Ribéry, Robben and Schweinsteiger.” Heynckes is convinced Usami can develop into “an important player for FC Bayern” over the next couple of years. For his part, the Japanese starlet accepts he will have to “work very hard“ as he seeks to improve his all-round game.

Alongside scorers Alaba, Petersen and Usami, there was vital match practice for Butt, Contento, Pranjic and Olic. Butt was virtually a spectator for the night but dealt capably with the odd cross delivered in his direction. Contento locked down his side of defence, Pranjic moved the ball sweetly in midfield, and sub Olic worked tirelessly after coming on. “The coach has succeeded in instilling a sense of belonging. That's crucial over a long season,“ commented captain for the night Butt.

The next all-Bavaria derby takes place on Saturday when Nürnberg come to visit. Alaba and Co will return to their seats on the bench, but the entire second string proved on Wednesday that Heynckes need have no worries at all about summoning them into the action.
